Rolls-Royce to deliver design and ship equipment for Belgium’s new research vessel


Rolls-Royce has been awarded a contract by the Spanish ship builder Freire to deliver ship design and equipment systems for a new oceanographic research vessel for Belgium. The IMO polar code compliant vessel will be designed to carry out research and survey tasks in the North Sea and its adjacent sea areas, but also in the Mediterranean and more northern areas.


The research vessel will cater for the requirements of the Belgian marine scientific community when performing advanced marine research and education at sea – today and in the coming years. This will include research within the fields of geology and sedimentology, fisheries, biology, chemistry, oceanography (including meteorology). In addition, the vessel will be part of hydrography campaigns.


Asbjørn Skaro, Rolls-Royce, Director Digital & Systems - Marine, said: “Three European countries have now chosen Rolls-Royce as a supplier of design and technology to their new research vessels; Belgium, Norway and the UK. These are all advanced, high-tech vessels that will carry out fundamental research at sea and below the seabed. We are of course honored to be part of such great tasks.”


The vessel, which is to replace the current RV Belgica, will be a UT 844 WP design from Rolls-Royce. In addition to ship design, Rolls-Royce will supply the main propulsion system, including side thrusters, Promas integrated propulsion and maneuvering system, power electric system and steering gear. A vital part of the systems delivery is also automation and control systems such as the propulsion control system, Unified Bridge and dynamic positioning (DP).


The project team responsible for the new research vessel is formed by the Belgian Defence, the Belgian Science Policy Office (BELSPO) and the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences – Operational Directorate Natural Environment (RBINS-OD Nature).


Detailed engineering and construction will take place at Freire’s shipyard in Vigo, Spain and the vessel is scheduled for delivery towards the end of 2020. Rolls-Royce currently has design and system deliveries for two other vessels under construction at Freire Shipyard.

Wärtsilä’s lock entry assist system aids in preventing damage to vessels and to waterway locks


The technology group Wärtsilä has developed a lock entry assist system that will facilitate a vessel’s approach and entrance into waterway locks. The development work has been carried out in cooperation with the Canada-based CSL Group. The initial deployment of the technology will be on board the ‘CSL St Laurent’, a 22,600 gross tonnage Trillium class bulk carrier owned by CSL. The ship operates on the waterways of the St Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes.


The Wärtsilä system comes in response to the increasing size of vessels operating on these waters. When entering the locks along the seaway, the clearance for larger vessels is minimal, and the lock entry itself has become increasingly difficult. Damage to both the ship and the lock walls can be avoided by facilitating the ship’s approach path to the locks, thereby making the operation safer, faster, and altogether more efficient.

The lock entry assist system uses high performance global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) to measure the ship’s position to centimetre accuracy as it enters the lock. Speed adaptive controls, together with allocation of the thruster and rudder, ensures that the vessel enters the lock in a consistent manner every time, while minimizing the influence of external forces from wind and current. During the entry, the system automatically controls the vessel’s lateral position and heading, allowing the operator to focus on controlling the speed of the vessel. A customized touchscreen interface is also being developed to simplify the operation and improve situational awareness.

Wärtsilä and CSL have established a close relationship over many years. CSL is the largest owner-operator of self-unloading ships in the world. Its fleet includes a number of Wärtsilä solutions, which are supported by Wärtsilä’s extensive service network.

BALLAST WATER MARKET DRIVES REVENUE HIKE FOR BIO-UV GROUP



Sales of the BIO-SEA ballast water treatment system have contributed to an increase in third quarter revenue for France-based BIO-UV Group. The Group reported a Q3 2018 revenue of €3.4m, an increase of 30% on the same period last year.


“The expanding ballast water market is the main driver underpinning growth, and one that is expected to continue over coming months,” said Benoît Gillmann, President and CEO, BIO-UV Group.


“We are currently experiencing a ramp-up in order intake following our USCG certification and anticipate BIO-UV Group total revenue growth in 2018 of at least 15%, driven in particular by a sharp acceleration of the ballast water treatment market, which should secure growth of at least 60% over the full year.”


To date, BIO-UV Group has supplied its BIO-SEA Ballast Water Treatment System to more than one hundred vessels worldwide, with more orders in progress. Owners operating the UV-based BIO-SEA includes Maersk Lines, MSC Cruises, CMA CGM and Louis Dreyfus Armateurs.


A strategy to increase its global footprint has also contributed to revenue growth. International expansion, which accounted for 50% of the Group’s revenue in 2017, saw the company establish a network of sales and distribution agents in more than 65 countries, with focus on key geographical areas in the Asia-Pacific region.


This year, the Group opened a subsidiary in Hong Kong to oversee future sales growth and ramp-up manufacturing in the region: BIO-UV Asia.


BIO-UV Group’s current orderbook is valued at €6.4m. Beyond 2018, the company reiterates its ambitions for 2022 to achieve revenue of around €40m.


Across all the available technologies, eleven ballast water treatment systems have received IMO and USCG approval.


BIO-UV Group is one of only three manufacturers of UV-based BWTS to have obtained approvals from both the International Maritime Organisation and the US Coast Guard.

New partnerships strengthen WinGD’s global training network 


The appointment of two new WinGD training partners will provide easier access to high quality training for ship operators and crews.


Strategically chosen for their high qualifications and location in prime maritime geographical areas, WinGD has signed agreements with Giga Mare Inc. in the Philippines, and BlackSea Training in the Ukraine.


By partnering with these training facilities in these key global locations, WinGD extends their services offered to ship owners in support of their low-speed dual-fuel and diesel engines.

Wärtsilä fully integrated scope chosen for largest LNG fuelled high-speed catamaran


The largest ever high-speed catamaran, which will operate on LNG fuel, will feature a fully integrated scope of supply from the technology group Wärtsilä. The 125 metres long vessel is being built at the Armon Gijón shipyard in Spain for Spanish ferry operator Baleària. The order with Wärtsilä was booked in Q2, 2018.


The ability of Wärtsilä to deliver a fully integrated scope, including the engines, the waterjets, and the LNG fuel storage and supply system, together with all the related auxiliary systems, was an important option for both the owner and shipyard.



“High efficiency, reduced operating costs, and environmental sustainability were the key values in the design of this exciting new high-speed ferry. Wärtsilä has a strong focus and excellent track record in all these areas, as well as unique integration capabilities. This project redefines the conventional standard for this type of vessel, enabling ‘greener’ operations and lower lifecycle operating costs. The use of LNG allows us to fulfil our commitment to the environment and to energy efficiency, while also keeping us one step ahead of the new pollutant gas reduction regulations scheduled for 2020,” says Juan M. Paino, CTO of Armón.

The vessel will operate on four highly efficient Wärtsilä 31DF dual-fuel engines, four Wärtsilä waterjets, and the Wärtsilä LNGPac fuel gas storage and supply system. It will have a service speed of 35 knots, and a top speed of more than 40 knots. The storage tanks give the ferry a range of 400 nautical miles. The equipment is scheduled for delivery to the yard in the latter half of 2019.


When delivered, the ferry will be capable of carrying 1200 passengers and 500 cars, or trucks covering a length of 500 metres plus 250 cars. Baleària will invest 90 million euros in the construction of this fast ferry, which is scheduled to start the aluminum cut next December and to enter into service in the summer of 2020.

Wärtsilä strengthens its position as a global operator in the underwater services market by acquiring Spanish Burriel Navarro


The technology group Wärtsilä has acquired Burriel Navarro, S.L, a company operating in underwater services in the main ports of Spain. The acquisition supports the growth of Wärtsilä’s underwater services and expands the company’s local presence in the European market. Burriel Navarro will be part of Trident, a Wärtsilä company. Burriel Navarro has 20 employees and its annual revenue is approximately EUR 1.3 million. The acquisition was signed and closed on 31 October 2018.


The acquisition of Burriel Navarro supports Wärtsilä in several areas – from developing its propulsion-related services and strengthening the competences on the underwater services market to supporting its purpose of enabling sustainable societies with smart technology. The acquisition complements the acquisition of Trident in early 2018, bringing opportunities to utilise Trident’s environmentally sound hull cleaning equipment on a wider geographical scale.  


A strong network around Europe

Founded in 1969, Burriel Navarro has a long-standing reputation in underwater services. Burriel Navarro specialises in a range of underwater work, including inspection, repair and hull cleaning. Having its head office in Valencia, the company operates an extensive service network in the main ports of Spain.


With the acquisition Wärtsilä strengthens its underwater-related services for customers along major European shipping routes and cruise itineraries even better. “The acquisition supports us in our goals of environmental responsibility by providing us with better access to local ports,” says Tamara De Gruyter, Vice President, Area North Europe, Wärtsilä Services. “The agreement also brings us great opportunities to provide more value adding services and shorter response times for our customers.”

현대중공업그룹, 사장단 인사 단행


현대중공업그룹은 6일(화) 주요 계열사 사장단 및 현대중공업 사업본부 대표에 대한 인사를 단행했다. 이번 인사에서는 현대중공업, 현대미포조선, 현대삼호중공업 등 그룹내 조선계열사와 정유부문을 대표하는 현대오일뱅크 사장을 신규 선임하는 등 주력 계열사 대표이사에 대한 세대교체 인사가 단행되었다. 


현대중공업 공동 대표이사 사장에는 현대미포조선 한영석(韓永錫) 사장과 그룹선박해양영업본부 가삼현(賈三鉉) 사장이 내정되었다. 한영석 사장은 1957년생으로 충남대 기계공학과를 졸업하고, 현대중공업에서 설계 및 생산본부장을 역임한 뒤, 2016년 10월부터 현대미포조선 사장으로 재직해 왔다. 부임이후 현대미포조선을 3년 연속 흑자로 이끌었으며, 합리적인 의사결정으로 조직을 안정적으로 운영해 왔다. 


가삼현 사장은 1957년생으로 연세대 경제학과를 졸업하고, 현대중공업 선박영업본부에서 근무하였으며, 런던지사장, 서울사무소장 등을 거쳐 2014년부터 그룹선박해양영업대표를 맡아왔다. 


현대미포조선 대표이사 사장에는 현대중공업 신현대(辛鉉大) 부사장이 사장으로 승진, 내정되었다. 신현대 사장은 1959년생으로 충북대 전기공학과를 졸업하고, 현대중공업 조선사업본부 계약관리, 의장, 시운전 담당을 거쳐 군산조선소장을 역임하였으며, 2016년 11월부터 현대중공업 조선사업본부 사업대표를 맡아 왔다. 다양한 업무경험을 바탕으로 조선사업에 대한 해박한 지식과 노하우로 현장 중심의 경영을 펼치고 있다. 


현대삼호중공업 대표이사 사장에는 이상균(李相鈞) 부사장이 사장으로 승진, 내정되었다. 이상균 사장은 1961년생으로 인하대 조선공학과를 졸업하고, 현대중공업 선박건조 분야에서 오랜기간 근무한 현장 전문가이다. 2015년 8월부터는 현대삼호중공업으로 자리를 옮겨 생산본부장을 맡아 왔으며, 현대삼호중공업의 생산공정을 안정적으로 이끌어 왔다. 


조선사업과 함께 현대중공업그룹의 한 축인 현대오일뱅크 대표이사 사장에는 강달호(姜達鎬) 부사장이 사장으로 승진, 내정되었다. 강달호 사장은 1958년생으로 연세대 화학공학과를 졸업하고, 현대오일뱅크 대산공장에서 생산부문장, 중앙기술연구원장 등을 역임했으며, 2014년부터 안전생산본부장을 맡아 왔다. 대산공장의 안전가동은 물론, 직원들과의 끊임없는 소통을 통해 공정개선과 혁신에 앞장서는 등 현대오일뱅크 성장의 숨은 역할을 해 왔다. 


또한, 이번 인사에서는 지난 7월 현대일렉트릭 대표에 취임한 정명림 부사장이 사장으로 승진했다.  이밖에 현대중공업 사업본부 대표에 대한 인사도 함께 단행되었다. 현대중공업 해양플랜트사업 대표에 박준성 전무, 엔진기계사업 대표에 이기동 전무가 각각 부사장으로 승진, 선임되었고, 현중지주 로봇사업 대표에는 현대중공업 서유성 전무가 선임되었다. 


이번 인사에 대해 현대중공업 관계자는 “대내외적으로 어려운 경영환경 속에서 기존 경영진들이 생존을 위한 위기극복에 매진했다면, 새로운 경영진들은 성장을 위한 변화와 혁신을 추진해 나가게 될 것”이라며, “이번 인사를 통해 현대중공업그룹은 재도약을 위한 새로운 출발을 선언한 것”이라고 밝혔다.

국제해사기구(IMO) 해양환경보호위원회(MEPC) 73차 회의 결과 - 황산화물 규제 경험축적기(EBP) 도입 제안 합의 유보


지난 10월 22일부터 26일까지 영국 런던에서 개최된 국제해사기구(IMO) 해양환경보호위원회(MEPC) 제 73차 회의에 참가한 한국선급(KR, 회장 이정기)에 따르면 현재 세계해사업계 초미의 관심사인 IMO 선박황산화물 규제 시행에 대해 미국 및 그리스 등 일부국가에서 주장한 경험축척기(EBP:Experience Building Phase) 도입에 관한 합의는 유보되었다. 


IMO는 선박배출 대기오염원인 황산화물을 규제하기 위해 2020년 1월 1일부터 전 세계 해역의 항행하는 선박들의 황산화물 배출량을 현행 3.5%에서 0.5%로 감소시키는 새로운 규제를 시행할 계획이다. 이에 따라 전 세계 해운업계는 선박 황산화물 배출량을 감소시키기 위해 선박에 황산화물 저감장치인 스크러버(Scrubber)룰 장착하거나 황함유량이 적은 저유황유 및 LNG를 연료로 활용하는 등 자본설비 투자를 활발히 진행해 오고 있는 상태이다. 


하지만 최근 美 행정부의 황산화물 규제 연기 압박 및 전 세계 최대 해운국인 그리스 선주협회 등에서 주장한 EBP는 2020년 IMO 황산화물 규제 시행 이후에 협약의 개정가능성을 내포하고 있어 시장에 큰 혼란을 불러일으켰고 금번 MEPC 73차 회의에서 가장 중요한 의제로 논의되었다. 


미국과 그리스가 제출한 문서의 주된 내용은 황함유량 0.50%이하 저황연료유의 사용과 관련된 시장에 만연해 있는 우려들에 대응하고자 EBP 도입을 제안하였으며 이는 절대 협약연기를 주장하는 것이 아니라는 입장이었다. 다만 2020년 규제시행 이후 규제관련 실측데이터를 분석하여 그 결과에 따라 필요시 협약을 개정하자는 내용의 EBP 도입제안은 미국, 그리스를 비롯하여 대부분의 편의치적국 및 저개발 국가들에서 지지를 받았으나, 대부분의 유럽연합 국가들은 반대의사를 표명하여 격렬한 논의 끝에 결국 금번 회의에서는 도입 합의가 무산되었다.


2020년 규제시행 전까지 남은 MEPC 회의는 2019년 5월에 개최되는 제 74차 회의 뿐이다. 하지만 차기 회의 시 EBP 도입 합의 여부와는 무관하게 IMO의 황산화물 규제는 계획대로 2020년 1월 1일부터 발효될 예정이다.

KOMEA-러 연방무역대표부 업무협약 MOU체결


한국조선해양기자재공업협동조합(KOMEA, 이사장 박윤소)과 주한 러시아 연방무역대표부(부대표 Alexander Arseniev)은 10월 31일 부산 녹산에 소재한 한국조선해양기자재글로벌지원센터에서 러시아 조선해양기자재 시장 진출 지원 및 양국 조선해양 산업 진흥을 위해 MOU를 체결하였다.


세부 협약 내용으로는 ▲양측의 경제협력 촉진 ▲국산화 정책에 필요한 조선해양기자재 및 업체에 대한 상호 관심분야 정보제공 ▲비즈니스 네트워크 구축 및 확장 ▲공동 연구 활동 ▲전시회, 세미나 등 유사한 활동 시 적극적인 지원 ▲전문 기술 및 관련 지식을 상호 교환하고, 교육의 기회를 마련 등으로 되어 있다. 

 이번 MOU는 긴밀한 협력관계 개발을 통해 실직적인 네트워크 체계를 구축하고, 상호의 목표 달성을 위한 절차 마련을 목표로 하고 있다. 


KOMEA는 국내 조선해양기자재 경쟁력 강화를 위하여 각종 포럼, 국내외 수출상담회 및 전시회 등을 주관하고 있으며, 특히 우수한 기술을 바탕으로 높은 신뢰도를 갖추고 있는 국내 조선해양기자재 기업들의 러시아 시장 진출을 도모하기 위하여 러시아 시장 진출 전략 설명회를 개최하는 등 국내 기자재 기업들에게 신흥시장 진출을 위한 정보제공에도 노력을 기울이고 있다. 


KOMEA 관계자는 “금번 협약을 계기로 양 기관의 장점을 활용하여, 국내 조선해양기자재 기업들의 러시아 조선해양기자재 수출시장 확대에 기여할 수 있기를 희망한다. 또한, 2019년 상반기 KOMEA 러시아 지사 설립을 통해 러시아 조선해양기자재 시장 진출 방안을 도출 및 제시할 수 있도록 노력할 것이며, 이를 토대로 어려운 시기를 보내고 있는 국내 조선해양기자재 기업들이 성장 동력을 마련하여 활기를 되찾기를 바란다.”라고 말했다.
