Horyong picks Strenx steel for tallest truck-mounted aerial lifts and ladder cars in South Korea

/ins South Korean-based Horyong Ltd boasts 28 years of know how in the production of truck mounted aerial lifts, used in construction and other work sites. To meet customer demand, and possess the competitive edge needed on the global market, the company almost exclusively uses SSAB’s Strenx performance steel in the special purpose vehicles manufactured.

All over the world urbanization continues to grow, and the construction of more housing and office buildings intensify the demand on industrial equipment. Customers want safe and durable vehicles. Horyong meets the need by designing aerial lift cranes that combines the highest level of design with the highest level of quality.

“I think that safety is the most important sector for our customers and our equipment is known to be strong. The My Inner Strenx certification makes our customers rely on the products as they trust the SSAB brand,” said Soo-jeong Lee, Senior Researcher at Horyong.

She has worked at Horyong for ten years and describes how Strenx performance steel is integrated as an imperative part of the aerial lift trucks design.

“Most of the steel that we use in our vehicles is SSAB’s high-strength steel. When we design our truck-mounted aerial lifts and ladder cars for operations in high places, we use 90 to 95 percent Strenx steel in the equipment. The steel plate series is reliable and gives the customers the trustworthiness that they seek. Because, when operating in such high places a lot of shaking and bending can contribute to dangerous situations that the customers of course want to avoid,” she said.

The 68,359 m² plant of the South Korean company Horyong is situated in Gimje, in the southwest part of the country. From here they ship aerial lift trucks, cargo cranes and eco-friendly electric self-propelled cranes all over the country, as well as export the products to countries around the world.

Truck-mounted aerial lifts are mainly used in construction and other work sites that are situated in high places, such as building maintenance. The vehicles improve logistics to high buildings, lifting heavy material and moving heavy objects. With 28 years of R&D efforts, Horyong produces the tallest ladder and aerial lift vehicles in South Korea – the highest of these reaching 75 meters up in the sky. In order to make the trucks able to be more efficient by lifting more material and reaching higher up, the structure needs to be as light as possible.

“Strenx steel improves the quality of our products. By making vehicles out of SSAB’s high-strength steel I think we will be able to knock out more excessive weight and continue to achieve even more innovative designs,” said Soo-jeong Lee.

Horyong Sales Manager Park Cheol agrees that the lightweight, yet high-strength steel from SSAB will help the company to innovate new and better products.

“We use SSAB’s Strenx steel plates to be able to follow the current global trend, which is making equipment light-weight. I think that this is something we can utilize in the future in the market for heavy operations, to reduce the weight and achieve even more efficient work,” he said.

Park Cheol feels that the partnership between SSAB and Horyong is a win-win relationship.

“We are manufacturing specialty purpose vehicles and the Strenx steel is the perfect fit for these challenging jobs. In addition, I think SSAB contributes greatly in the development of our commodities. As we are part of the My Inner Strenx program, SSAB provides us with extensive and prioritized support on the technicalities of the steel plates so we learn more about how we can use them, and consequently develop new products. I'm sure that this collaboration is going to continue to bring us even better results in the future,” he said.

Golar LNG enters into an agreement to supply a FLNG unit to BP for phase 1 of the Greater Tortue / Ahmeyim Project, West Africa

Golar LNG Limited ("Golar" or "the Company") (NASDAQ: GLNG) announces today that Gimi MS Corporation ("Gimi MS"), a newly incorporated subsidiary of the Company, has entered into a 20-year Lease and Operate Agreement ("LOA") with BP for the charter of an FLNG unit, Gimi, to service the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project.

Expected to commence production in 2022, the FLNG Unit Gimi will liquefy gas as part of the first phase of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project and be located at an innovative nearshore hub located on the Mauritania and Senegal maritime border. FLNG Gimi is designed to produce an average of approximately 2.5 million tonnes of LNG per annum, using the Black & Veatch "Prico" liquefaction process, with the total gas resources in the field estimated to be around 15 trillion cubic feet.

Concurrent with its entry into the LOA, Gimi MS has entered into a Subscription Agreement (subject to closing conditions) with First FLNG Holdings Pte. Ltd., an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel Capital, in respect of their participation in a 30% share of FLNG Gimi.  Gimi MS will construct, own and operate FLNG Gimi and First FLNG Holdings Pte. Ltd. will subscribe for 30% of the total issued ordinary share capital of Gimi MS for a subscription price equivalent to 30% of the project cost. LNG carrier Gimi has been relocated from layup to Keppel Shipyard in Singapore where conversion works are expected to commence soon.

Construction of FLNG Gimi is expected to cost approximately $1.3 billion, excluding financing costs. Once accepted under the contract, annual earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization of approximately $215 million with potential upside for over performance are expected.  Golar is also in the final stages of receiving an underwritten credit commitment for a $700 million long-term financing facility from a syndicate of international banks that will be available during construction.  Golar's plan is that together with other financing facilities, by the end of the 4-year construction period the anticipated maximum total equity contribution from the Company in respect of its 70% stake will be approximately $300 million.

Commenting on the LOA, Golar CEO Iain Ross said, "This landmark 20-year agreement with BP, which is Golar's second FLNG tolling agreement, is the culmination of a lot of hard work and commitment from the project and commercial teams that commenced late 2017.  The potential of Golar's floating LNG solution was reinforced by FLNG Hilli Episeyo's proof of concept, Heads of Terms were agreed with BP and its partners in April 2018 and work has been ongoing via the previously reported Limited Notice to Proceed.  Golar is delighted to have the opportunity to demonstrate the safe and reliable operation, quality and value of its FLNG offering to such a world class energy company as BP and looks forward to safely delivering and building on this long-term relationship over the decades ahead".

Wärtsilä lifecycle solution to provide reliable support to Tokyo LNG Tanker Co.

The technology group Wärtsilä has signed a long-term Wärtsilä Optimised maintenance solution with Japanese LNG shipowner Tokyo LNG Tanker Co. Ltd, a subsidiary of Tokyo Gas. The solution will support the customer in a range of maintenance needs for three LNG carriers powered by Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines. The agreement was signed in December 2018, and the order booked in January 2019.

The solution, the first of its kind between Wärtsilä and a fully owned Japanese marine customer, covers scheduled maintenance as well as dynamic maintenance planning inspections and spare parts. The optimised, condition-based maintenance provided by Wärtsilä will enable predictive assessments of servicing needs based on actual component performance, rather than conventional time-based scheduling. This reliability in equipment performance will support Tokyo LNG Tanker’s operations by eliminating the need for unexpected and unscheduled vessel repairs.

“Wärtsilä can provide maintenance on a wide scale that positions well with our needs,” says Hajime Adachi, General Manager of Engineering Department, Tokyo LNG Tanker. “We need a reliable lifecycle partner who can respond to our needs and enable us to operate as smoothly as possible. This is why we have chosen Wärtsilä as our maintenance partner.”

“Our agreement with Tokyo LNG Tanker is an important aid in ensuring their fleet availability and eliminating unexpected breakdowns. It will allow the customer to focus on their core business, and strengthen the reliability of their operations,” says John Sydney, Vice President, Middle East & Asia, Wärtsilä Marine.

The 165,000 cbm tankers are each powered by four 9-cylinder Wärtsilä 50DF and one 6-cylinder Wärtsilä 50DF engines. Wärtsilä’s global service network is the most extensive in the marine industry.
