Sunseeker International and Rolls-Royce to present first production yacht with MTU hybrid power in 2020

British luxury yacht manufacturer Sunseeker International and Rolls-Royce have agreed to present the first yacht fitted with an MTU series production hybrid propulsion system in 2020. At Boot Düsseldorf from 19 until 27 January Sunseeker and MTU will present the new hybrid propulsion system in hall 6 at booth B61.

Sean Robertson, Sales Director at Sunseeker International commented: “Sunseeker has always led the industry by innovating and being first to market so it is entirely appropriate that we are the first luxury performance yacht manufacturer to partner with MTU Hybrid Power which will revolutionise how all customers power their boats over the coming years. The way owners are using their boats continues to evolve with efficiency and noise reduction now as important as features and volume which all contribute to their ultimate purchase decision. This latest hybrid technology will feature in a brand new model launching in 2020 and will allow owners a choice of multiple operating modes from all-electric with zero emissions through to use of the twin 12-cylinder diesel engines delivering efficient class-leading performance. We will always be led by our customers who are seeking the highest levels of innovation to match their extended cruising aspirations.”

Knut Müller, Head of Marine and Government Business at MTU, said: “The combination of diesel engines and electric motors, in addition to batteries and their variable areas of application, offer yacht owners significant benefits. Silent cruising, combined with low vibration and emission levels, offer tremendous gains in terms of on-board comfort. High performance levels, efficiency, environmental compatibility and the flexibility of the propulsion system are of great interest today when operating a yacht. We believe that the focus in the future yacht industry will be more and more on smart and innovative system solutions rather than just focussing on the power output level.”

Completely integrated hybrid propulsion system fitted with MTU Series 2000 engines

The new Sunseeker yacht will have an integrated MTU hybrid propulsion system. It will consist of two 12-cylinder MTU Series 2000 diesel engines (each delivering around 1,432 kW/ 1,947 hp), on-board generators, electric propulsion modules, transmission system, batteries, control and monitoring systems and can be expanded on a modular basis.

The yacht will be provided with six different operating modes that are easy to operate, including the automated “smart hybrid” and “charge hybrid” modes, which enable all power sources to be used as required. In an “electric mode” the yacht propulsion and on-board power can be supplied continuously by the generators, providing optimisation of fuel consumption and comfort on-board for long and overnight passages. In “silent mode”, which uses power solely from the batteries, up to 40 minutes of propulsion and 120 minutes of on-board power are available with each pair of MTU batteries installed, with no emissions produced whatsoever.

Successful collaboration going back more than 18 years

Sunseeker and MTU UK have had a successful working relationship for more than 18 years, with over 1.8 million hp of MTU power installed in yachts with lengths of between 20 and 47 metres. As early as 2010, the two companies laid the basis for the hybrid propulsion system in tests that were carried out on a prototype yacht.

The ‘Piana’, a ro-pax ferry that travels between Marseille and Corsica, was equipped with Eniram Trim and Speed solutions in April 2017. The evaluation period, which ended in summer 2018, resulted in annualized fuel savings of around 2%. These savings enable payback on the investment in just two years. The savings analysis showed a clear relationship between the rate of usage of the optimisation tools and the savings achieved. The reduction in fuel consumption also delivers a corresponding reduction in exhaust emissions.

“Performance is one of our core values. To develop our technological capability, we chose Wärtsilä’s Eniram energy management and optimization technology. Together with Wärtsilä, we were able to achieve tangible and sustainable savings, which have been accessed thanks to their advanced products, support and training. We will definitely scale these great results to our entire fleet while discovering new possibilities for utilising the data,” comments Christophe Seguinot, Technical Director, La Méridionale.

“This is an excellent case of successful cooperation between Wärtsilä and the customer. By working closely with La Méridionale, we have been able to evolve our products to meet the specific needs of ferry operations, and we appreciate La Méridionale’s positive support throughout this process. We look forward to applying the experience to the rest of their fleet”, comments Andrew Rayner, Senior Sales Manager, Eniram.

La Méridionale operates from Marseille for more than 80 years and is one of the port’s oldest ship-owners. Its activities have developed considerably since it was founded. It now runs a daily service to Corsica, as well as a once-weekly service to Sardinia for both passengers and freight.

Eniram was acquired by Wärtsilä Corporation in July 2016. The company was established in 2005, and today provides the marine industry with leading insights for asset, operations, and commercial shipping management. The Eniram Insight Factory provides decision-making support for its partners based on real time data collection, statistical modelling, and predictive simulations. The company’s mission is to maximize the efficiency, cost effectiveness, and overall profitability of its customers’ operations, while cutting harmful emissions. which ended in summer 2018, resulted in annualized fuel savings of around 2%. SYNERGY GROUP FLEET BOOSTED BY NEW 20,000+ TEU CONTAINERSHIP

Synergy Group has taken delivery of Ever Gifted, an Ultra Large Container Vessel (ULCV) newbuilding constructed by renowned Japanese shipbuilder Imabari Shipbuilding.

Currently under Synergy’s technical management on Evergreen Line’s popular Far East-North Europe and Mediterranean service, the 20,000+ TEU capacity ULCV is one of the largest container ships in service worldwide.

“As a leader within the ship management sector, we are thrilled to join the 20,000+ TEU club,” said Captain Rajesh Unni, CEO and Founder of Singapore-headquartered Synergy Group.

“The Ever Gifted is one of the highest capacity container ships currently in service. It is also one of the most efficient, enviro-friendly and impressive vessels deployed across Evergreen’s service network. It offers fuel-efficient headhaul options and slow steaming variations on backhauls. We are absolutely delighted to have been entrusted with its safe operation.”

The Singapore-flagged, 199,489dwt Ever Gifted has an overall length (L.O.A) of 399.98 metres, beam of 58.8 metres, total capacity of 20,388 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) and 1,300 reefer points.

Fitted with a fuel optimised MAN B&W 11-cylinder G95ME engine, Ever Gifted offers a service speed of 23.2 knots and weighs in at 217,762 MT.

On January 15, Synergy will take delivery of Ever Grade, a sistership of Ever Gifted also constructed by Imabari Shipbuilding. “We eagerly look forward to the addition of the next set of ULCVs joining our fleet in the very near future as their Owners take advantage of our expertise in the management of the world’s largest container ships,” said Captain Unni.

“With a fleet of more than 200 vessels covering all sectors of the commercial maritime fleet, adding these ULCVs to our fleet further emphasises how Synergy Group has cemented it status as one of the world’s leading shipmanagers.”

Synergy continues to break new ground in technical and commercial shipmanagement innovation, consistently demonstrating its ability to manage the most technologically-advanced vessels joining the global fleet. In November last year, Synergy also joined with leading shipowners Reederei NORD and NISSEN Kaiun to set up N2Tankers, a new Aframax tanker pool (Read More).

“I think we have shown time and again that Synergy is uniquely equipped to take on the most demanding technical and commercial shipmanagement challenges,” said Captain Unni.

“Two years ago, we prepared and trained specialised crew to operate the world’s first Very Large Ethane Carriers (VLEC). It is challenges like these that we excel in. It’s not only about managing traditional ships. As a technical partner for shipowners, we need to be prepared to take on the challenges posed by new technology.

“Larger ships result in more complexity. New technology brings many unknowns. Modern shipmanagement is about preparing the next generation of crew to face these challenges and put in place processes that work seamlessly for these new kinds of vessel operations. Our teams have proven over and over that they can find the right solutions.

“These achievements would not be possible if our onshore and seagoing staff were not equipped and supported to ensure they perform to the peak of their capabilities.

“It’s all about people and building a unique culture. It takes time, but every step in that journey is worthwhile.”

Jensen Maritime Provides Design for Shaver Transportation’s New Tugboat – Samantha S

Jensen Maritime, Crowley Maritime Corp.’s Seattle-based naval architecture and marine engineering company, has provided the detailed design for Shaver Transportation Company’s new, Z-drive tug – Samantha S. The multi-purpose tug was built at Diversified Marine Inc., in Portland, Ore., and is operating along the West Coast. The tug is ABS-classed and carries a FFV1 firefighting notation.

The 112-foot by 44-foot tug has a 22-foot draft, was built for escort, ocean towing and ship assist, and has firefighting capabilities if needed. The tug features a raised pilot house and a squared forward end. The large, flat bow allows the tug to come up flat against the transom of ocean-going ships in the Columbia River. The tug is equipped with two wire winches forward, and six aft, for hard wiring to the stern of large ships for escort. It has an enhanced fuel capacity of 108,000 gallons for offshore and rescue tows and accommodations for up to 10 crewmembers.

She is outfitted with a pair of GE 12V250 U.S. EPA Tier IV, medium-speed diesel main engines; a pair of Rolls Royce 305, four-bladed z-Drives; a pair of EPA Tier III, John Deere 6090A generators; and one Caterpillar C32 fire pump power plant. The engines are rated at 4,218 HP each, and will provide enough power to develop an estimated 230,000 pounds of bollard pull.

Her deck machinery consists of the previously listed eight deck winches, all of which are Wintech 120-ton (SWL) winches; one Rapp HA-149H-250 escort winch; and a Rapp double drum AHTW-75H-165 tow winch. The fire pump and the two fire monitors are provided by Fire Fighting Systems U.S. agent, Inmar Systems. The firefighting system has the capability to pump more than 12,000 gallons per minute to fight marine and near shore fires.

“The size and special features of Samantha S demonstrate our ability to provide agile, efficient vessels for a variety of requirements,” said Bryan Nichols, director, business development, Jensen. “This tug is the latest multi-purpose escort, ocean towing and assist tugboat to hit the water from our diverse design portfolio which includes all types of workboats from 55-foot push boats to 225-foot anchor-handling tugs.”
