Peace of mind in muddy waters High-end filters secure performance
Now that the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention has entered into force, the practical side of ballast water treatment is coming into focus. Questions about legislation are giving way to questions about how ballast water treatment systems cope with real-world challenges – such as muddy waters.
“Many vessels sail in waters that pose real concerns for ballast water treatment systems and their filters,” says Anders Lindmark, Head of Alfa Laval PureBallast. “Filter clogging is easy to avoid, but doing so requires a high-end filter with enhanced cleaning capabilities.”
Recently, Alfa Laval PureBallast 3.1 helped prove that ballast water treatment systems can, in fact, succeed in muddy waters. In both controlled and onboard testing, the system’s high-end filter performed reliably, even at extreme sediment levels. You can read more about these tests in our latest white paper.
One of the ship owners involved in the tests, the international dredging specialist Van Oord, shares more about the experience in a recent editorial. Also featured is cruise operator MSC, whose perspective is based not on testing, but on practical experience from no less than 26 PureBallast 3.1 systems.
