솔베르그 노르웨이 대사, 현대중공업 방문



프로데 솔베르그(Frode Solberg) 노르웨이 주한 대사가 조선·해양플랜트 분야에서 협력을 강화하기 위해 현대중공업을 방문했다. 


솔베르그 대사는 일행은 지난 16일(수) 오후 현대중공업 울산 본사를 찾아 한영석 현대중공업 사장, 박준성 해양 사업대표 등 경영진과 환담을 나눴다. 


이날 솔베르그 대사는 노르웨이 해역의 유전 개발과 원유·가스운반선 사업 등에서 노르웨이 정부 및 기업들과 오랜 파트너 관계를 유지하고 있는 현대중공업에 큰 관심을 나타내며, 양국의 산업 발전을 위해 지속적인 협력을 당부했다. 


노르웨이는 지난 2017년 전 세계 발주량(681억 달러/1천127척)의 7.6%인 50억 달러(62척)의 선박을 발주한 세계 5위 국가(선박 발주 기준)다. 


현대중공업은 지난 1979년부터 지금까지 27개 노르웨이 선사로부터 총 106척의 선박을 수주해 100척을 성공적으로 인도했으며, 현재는 셔틀탱커 2척과 LNG운반선 3척, LPG운반선 1척 등 6척을 건조 중에 있다. 


또 노르웨이 국영석유회사인 에퀴노르(Equinor)사의 ‘아스타 한스틴(Aasta Hansteen) 원통형 해상가스생산설비’ 등 지금까지 100억 달러 상당의 해양플랜트 공사를 수주한 바 있다. 


현대중공업 한영석 사장은 “창사 이래 쌓아온 두터운 신뢰를 바탕으로 앞으로도 조선·해양 분야의 지속적인 협력을 기대한다”며, “에너지산업분야에서도 기술 제휴를 활발히 해나갈 것”이라고 말했다.

Polish Szczecin is top bulk terminal in new BIMCO report

The best performing port, in BIMCO’s Dry Bulk Terminals Vetting Report 2018, is Szczecin in Poland. The report collected input from 144 ships covering 381 terminals. A total of 97% of the reports were rated as average or better, which gave an average rating of 3.6 (out of five). The result is a marginal better than last year’s results.



“I think, in many ways, the report shows an encouraging trend, that bulk terminals generally perform well - only four reports were rated as “poor”, says Aron Sorensen, Head of Maritime Technology and Regulation at BIMCO.


The reports show that good communication between ship and terminal is a crucial part of port performance and is factor acknowledged in written responses by captains.


The number of reports contributed to BIMCO rose by 52% to 916 in total, increasing the number of ports covered by 102. Albeit, the reports originate from a small number of companies, which partly explains a somewhat skewed geographical spread of the report.


“I think this information is valuable to both the shipowners and the ports, but we are still far from satisfied with the number of reports submitted to us for this initiative,” Sorensen says.


Ideally, BIMCO would like to have 1000 ships participating in the survey.

3. Newcastle, Australia

4. Gladstone, Australia

5. Ciénaga, Colombia


The report indicates improved communication between the terminals and the ships, but adequate language skills remain a problem in some locations.


The survey also looked into waste handling, and the number of ships experiencing a terminal’s refusal to collect garbage or exorbitant prices to do so, is still too high, according to the report.


“We need terminals and ports to live up to their responsibility and receive waste at a reasonable price,” Sorensen says.


Another point of concern was that the setting of gangways was impossible in 11% of all cases, thereby restricting the access to and from the ship. This is clearly unacceptable and must be addressed as a safety matter.

Sunseeker International and Rolls-Royce to present first production yacht with MTU hybrid power in 2020



British luxury yacht manufacturer Sunseeker International and Rolls-Royce have agreed to present the first yacht fitted with an MTU series production hybrid propulsion system in 2020. At Boot Düsseldorf from 19 until 27 January Sunseeker and MTU will present the new hybrid propulsion system in hall 6 at booth B61.

Completely integrated hybrid propulsion system fitted with MTU Series 2000 engines

The new Sunseeker yacht will have an integrated MTU hybrid propulsion system. It will consist of two 12-cylinder MTU Series 2000 diesel engines (each delivering around 1,432 kW/ 1,947 hp), on-board generators, electric propulsion modules, transmission system, batteries, control and monitoring systems and can be expanded on a modular basis.


The yacht will be provided with six different operating modes that are easy to operate, including the automated “smart hybrid” and “charge hybrid” modes, which enable all power sources to be used as required. In an “electric mode” the yacht propulsion and on-board power can be supplied continuously by the generators, providing optimisation of fuel consumption and comfort on-board for long and overnight passages. In “silent mode”, which uses power solely from the batteries, up to 40 minutes of propulsion and 120 minutes of on-board power are available with each pair of MTU batteries installed, with no emissions produced whatsoever.


Successful collaboration going back more than 18 years 

Sunseeker and MTU UK have had a successful working relationship for more than 18 years, with over 1.8 million hp of MTU power installed in yachts with lengths of between 20 and 47 metres. As early as 2010, the two companies laid the basis for the hybrid propulsion system in tests that were carried out on a prototype yacht.

Eniram, a Wärtsilä company and French ferry operator La Méridionale, have taken notable steps on digitalising La Méridionale’s fleet with the help of the latest energy management technology. This partnership is in line with Wärtsilä’s Smart Marine vision, which through the extensive use of digitalisation, will enable the efficient use of resources with the least possible impact on the environment.

SYNERGY GROUP FLEET BOOSTED BY NEW 20,000+ TEU CONTAINERSHIP



Synergy Group has taken delivery of Ever Gifted, an Ultra Large Container Vessel (ULCV) newbuilding constructed by renowned Japanese shipbuilder Imabari Shipbuilding.


Currently under Synergy’s technical management on Evergreen Line’s popular Far East-North Europe and Mediterranean service, the 20,000+ TEU capacity ULCV is one of the largest container ships in service worldwide.


“As a leader within the ship management sector, we are thrilled to join the 20,000+ TEU club,” said Captain Rajesh Unni, CEO and Founder of Singapore-headquartered Synergy Group. 


“The Ever Gifted is one of the highest capacity container ships currently in service. It is also one of the most efficient, enviro-friendly and impressive vessels deployed across Evergreen’s service network. It offers fuel-efficient headhaul options and slow steaming variations on backhauls. We are absolutely delighted to have been entrusted with its safe operation.”


The Singapore-flagged, 199,489dwt Ever Gifted has an overall length (L.O.A) of 399.98 metres, beam of 58.8 metres, total capacity of 20,388 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) and 1,300 reefer points.


Fitted with a fuel optimised MAN B&W 11-cylinder G95ME engine, Ever Gifted offers a service speed of 23.2 knots and weighs in at 217,762 MT.


On January 15, Synergy will take delivery of Ever Grade, a sistership of Ever Gifted also constructed by Imabari Shipbuilding. “We eagerly look forward to the addition of the next set of ULCVs joining our fleet in the very near future as their Owners take advantage of our expertise in the management of the world’s largest container ships,” said Captain Unni.

Jensen Maritime Provides Design for Shaver Transportation’s New Tugboat – Samantha S 




Jensen Maritime, Crowley Maritime Corp.’s Seattle-based naval architecture and marine engineering company, has provided the detailed design for Shaver Transportation Company’s new, Z-drive tug – Samantha S. The multi-purpose tug was built at Diversified Marine Inc., in Portland, Ore., and is operating along the West Coast. The tug is ABS-classed and carries a FFV1 firefighting notation.


The 112-foot by 44-foot tug has a 22-foot draft, was built for escort, ocean towing and ship assist, and has firefighting capabilities if needed. The tug features a raised pilot house and a squared forward end. The large, flat bow allows the tug to come up flat against the transom of ocean-going ships in the Columbia River. The tug is equipped with two wire winches forward, and six aft, for hard wiring to the stern of large ships for escort. It has an enhanced fuel capacity of 108,000 gallons for offshore and rescue tows and accommodations for up to 10 crewmembers.


She is outfitted with a pair of GE 12V250 U.S. EPA Tier IV, medium-speed diesel main engines; a pair of Rolls Royce 305, four-bladed z-Drives; a pair of EPA Tier III, John Deere 6090A generators; and one Caterpillar C32 fire pump power plant. The engines are rated at 4,218 HP each, and will provide enough power to develop an estimated 230,000 pounds of bollard pull.


Her deck machinery consists of the previously listed eight deck winches, all of which are Wintech 120-ton (SWL) winches; one Rapp HA-149H-250 escort winch; and a Rapp double drum AHTW-75H-165 tow winch. The fire pump and the two fire monitors are provided by Fire Fighting Systems U.S. agent, Inmar Systems. The firefighting system has the capability to pump more than 12,000 gallons per minute to fight marine and near shore fires.


“The size and special features of Samantha S demonstrate our ability to provide agile, efficient vessels for a variety of requirements,” said Bryan Nichols, director, business development, Jensen. “This tug is the latest multi-purpose escort, ocean towing and assist tugboat to hit the water from our diverse design portfolio which includes all types of workboats from 55-foot push boats to 225-foot anchor-handling tugs.”

Epic Gas simplifies navigation by switching to GNS and Voyager




Leader in digital navigation wins contract to supply chart data and software tools to the entire Epic Gas fleet


GNS, the maritime technology company, has been awarded the contract to supply the fleet of Singapore-based Epic Gas Ship Management and its shore-based marine team with a complete navigation solution.


GNS won the contract following a competitive tender during which Epic Gas ran extensive sea and shore-based trials over a six-month period evaluating solutions from three vendors. Key evaluation criteria were intuitiveness of the software and simplicity of the end-to-end service, which includes everything from route planning and monitoring through to the efficient transfer of ENCs to ECDIS for voyage execution.


Capt. Martin Brzuska, Head of Group Marine Assurance, DPA at Epic Gas said:


“The most important thing for us is safe transportation of our cargoes globally. We wanted a solution that would really enhance bridge operations and support our crews in improving safety and efficiency onboard, Crew feedback on the GNS solution during our trials was exceptional across all areas in particular ease of use and simplicity, as well as the sophistication of the tools provided. GNS’s Voyager solution has become a great tool for us.”


GNS will provide digital charts and publications, paper products and navigational software tools to Epic’s fleet of 38 modern and high quality fully pressurised gas tankers. GNS will also provide its new GPS overlay that provides real time vessel positioning back of bridge and its V-Drive tool for transferring ENCs and updates to ECDIS.


The deal also includes Voyager FLEET INSIGHT, the company’s online service for ship managers, which will give the office team at Epic Gas access to a rich set of fleet analytics as well as office-based tools to help enhance the safety and compliance of the fleet even further.


Epic Gas completed its roll out of GNS services across of the fleet in Q4 of 2018.
